Give Today
Health Care Center in Schools is facing many new challenges in the schools this year. Of those children enrolled in East Baton Rouge public schools in 2007-08, 79.4% of them qualified for the Free or Reduced Lunch Program, which means a majority of these children are living near or below the poverty level. This is an increase of 3.26% from the 2006-07 school year. For many of these children, HCCS is the only medical care they receive, unless a visit to the emergency room is needed.

Over 2000 children who were displaced due to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita remain in EBR parish schools. Besides standard medical care needs, we continue to see mental health issues related to the hurricanes. These students need counseling and support that is not being provided any other way. Many other environmental factors may cause behavioral issues that can be addressed with counseling and can prevent these issues from escalating.

Clearly, children must be healthy, both physically and mentally, to be able to learn and perform well in school.

Won’t you help HCCS continue to improve on the medical and mental health services provided to EBR school children?
