December Training Day: The Hot and Cold

The third Wednesday of every month serves as a day for gathering and training for staff from various disciplines. Temperature control seemed to be the main folly of the day.

Health center staff members attend a mental health learning session on skills for dealing with anxiety, depression, disruptive behavior disorders, and substance abuse. The cold weather kept a chill in the room at the Arts Council of GBR.

Members from several health centers met Wednesday morning to enhance or develop skills for dealing with mental health problems in children. The training was facilitated by Holley Galland, M.D., medical director of HCCS, and Sharon Hoover Stephan, P.H.D. from the Center for School Mental Health Assistance.

Throughout the training the facilitators used interactive training to help warm the participants in the chilly art exhibition room. The training was all day at the Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge.

Conversely the nurses from the coordinated school health services program endured to a very warm afternoon meeting at Capitol High School’s Health Center.

Over 20 nurses convened to introduce new staff, review initial health assessments and progress reports, and review health care plans.

The meeting which is normally held at the Child Nutrition Center (CNC) was moved to the Health Center because the CNC was not available.

The room was smaller and warmer than expected, parking was sparse, but the snacks and holiday goodies provided by the first call managers still put smiles on faces.
