Local Leaders Serve the Children of Baton Rouge

One of the first steps in mobilizing an advisory group for the coordinated school health services program occurred Wednesday afternoon downtown.

Several volunteers met at the Baton Rouge Area Foundation to discuss the delivery model currently in use by Health Care Centers in Schools (HCCS). Members of the committee use this information to suggest improvements to provide the best health care for students.

Sue Catchings, Executive Director for HCCS, explains the service delivery model to Dr. Leggio Wednesday at the Baton Rouge Area Foundation. Leggio is a member of the coordinated school health services advisory committee.

The official name of the committee is the Coordinated School Health Advisory Committee or CSHAC (pronounced See-shack)

CSHAC representatives are nominated and selected by the East Baton Rouge Parish School System and HCCS. Currently there are 17 members serving varied terms from 1 to 3 years.

The group is charged with many duties including making certain the program meets the provisions set in the contract with the school system, recommending changes to the arrangement, acting as a community resource, and advocating for better funding from local, state and federal organizations.
