Health Tip of the Month

SUN SAFETY

Summer is a fun time for lots of outdoor activities, but sometimes the effects of the sun can spoil our fun. Remember some simple tips for preventing sunburn, heat stroke and long-term effects of sun exposure (wrinkles and possible skin cancer).

1. Limit sun exposure.

2.
Wear protective clothing.

3. Use sunscreen: Sunscreen should be applied 30 minutes before going outdoors and reapplied at least every two hours. Use water-resistant sunscreen with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher. Some medications, such as antibiotics or other even ibuprofen, can increase sensitivity to the sun.

4. Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes and sensitive skin around the eyes from harmful UV rays (long-term sun exposure can increase the long-term risk of developing cataracts).

5. Wear wide-brimmed hats and seek shade under trees or a beach umbrella.
